Outbuilding Construction Essex
This job took us to a garden in the CM postcode area of Essex, where the customer wanted extra storage space and had decided a new outer building was the answer. Rather than clearing out a shed or squeezing more into the loft, they asked us to put up a proper structure they could rely on for years. It's a common request in Essex gardens, where space is often at a premium and families end up needing somewhere dry and secure to keep tools, bikes, or seasonal items out of the house.
We worked through the build over four days, from groundwork and framing through to the roof covering going on. Jobs like this move quickly once the base is sorted, but we don't rush the stages that matter, particularly when it comes to keeping the structure weathertight from day one.

Roof covering and weatherproofing
For the roof, we used three layers of high-performance felt. This is a tried and tested method for outbuildings and garden structures, giving good protection against rain without adding unnecessary weight or cost. Felt roofing suits this kind of build well because it's flexible enough to handle the lower pitches typical of garden outbuildings, and it's a straightforward system to maintain over time.
Getting the layers right matters more than people realise. Each layer needs to bond properly and sit correctly at the joints and edges, otherwise you end up with weak points that let water in over time. We took care with the detailing around the edges of the roof to make sure the whole thing would hold up through an Essex winter and beyond.

Why the timing made sense
The customer's reasoning for getting this done now was simple: they needed somewhere to store things and didn't have it. That's often how these projects come about. Rather than putting up with clutter indoors or in a garage that's meant for the car, a dedicated outer building gives a clear, separate space for whatever needs keeping. Whether it ends up as a workshop, a home office, or just a place to store garden equipment, having the structure in place gives the customer options going forward.
Working to a high standard
With over 40 years of combined experience across the team at HighPoint Roofing And Building, we've built and roofed enough garden structures to know where problems tend to start. Most of it comes down to preparation and getting the roof detailing right the first time. We carry public liability insurance on every job, and this outbuilding comes with a 10 year guarantee, so the customer has peace of mind long after we've packed up the van.
