Felt Roofing in Ruislip
A felt roof job in Ruislip
This job came in for a property in Ruislip needing a flat roof sorted properly. The old covering had run its course, so HighPoint Roofing and Building went in with a full strip and a new system built up from scratch. The work covered the roof itself plus the fascia edge and guttering, so the whole top of the building was dealt with in one go rather than patching bits here and there.
We fitted three layers of high-performance torch-on felt: two underlay layers followed by a mineral finish on top. This is the standard build-up we use when we want a roof that's going to hold up against London weather for years rather than months, and it gave the client a covering with proper depth and protection rather than a single thin sheet.
Why three layers matters
A lot of flat roofs fail early because they're only fitted with one layer, or the layers aren't bonded properly. Torch-on felt works by heating each sheet as it goes down so it fuses to the layer below, sealing out water at the joints. With two underlay layers and a mineral cap sheet on top, you get a roof with real thickness to it. The mineral finish also does a job protecting the felt underneath from UV, which is what usually causes older felt roofs to go brittle and crack over time.
Getting this right is really what felt roofing comes down to, doing the layers properly and not cutting corners on the detail work around edges and upstands.
New fascias and guttering
Alongside the roof, we fitted new UPVC fascia boards along the edge and replaced the guttering. Old timber fascias tend to rot where water sits, and once that happens the roof edge is never properly sealed no matter how good the felt is above it. UPVC doesn't have that problem, so it made sense to do both jobs together rather than leave the client with a new roof sat on tired edge boards. New guttering was fitted to match, giving the roof somewhere proper for water to run off to rather than sitting or overflowing at the edges.
Working in Ruislip
We cover jobs across London and the surrounding areas, and Ruislip is somewhere we've worked in a fair bit. Flat roofs on extensions, garages, and outbuildings are common around here, and torch-on felt is usually the right call for that kind of roof, it's a proven method, straightforward to maintain, and cost-effective compared with some of the alternatives on the market.
Guarantee and cover
Every job we do is backed by a 10 year guarantee, so the client here has that peace of mind long after we've packed up and left. We're also covered by public liability insurance, which matters on any roofing job, particularly one involving torch-on work. With over 40 years of experience between us, we've fitted enough of these roofs to know where problems usually start and how to avoid them, from poor detailing at joints to skimping on layers to save time.
