The Problem We Found

This job came in after the customer had been dealing with a leaking roof for some time. Once we got up there it was clear the old covering had had enough, and when we stripped it back we found the battens underneath had been damaged too, which needed sorting before any new tiles could go on.

Stripping Back and Making Good

With the old tiles off, we replaced the damaged battens and got the roof structure sound again. We fitted a breathable membrane conforming to British Standards across the whole roof, which gives the timbers underneath a chance to breathe while still keeping the weather out. Scaffolding was arranged for the full duration of the job to keep the work safe and give us proper access to every part of the roof, including the chimney.

Tiles, Flashing and Ventilation

For the covering we used Redland 49 tiles in a rustic red finish, which was the colour the customer wanted. This was a full re-roof rather than a patch repair, and this kind of roof replacement in Watford usually runs to a couple of days once access is sorted, which is exactly how this one went. We also fitted new lead flashing around the chimney and to the valleys, and improved the ventilation across the roof so moisture has somewhere to go rather than sitting in the loft space.

Ridge Detail and Insulation

A dry ridge system was used along the apex rather than traditional mortar bedding, which holds up better over time and needs less maintenance going forward. Insulation was also fitted to help with heat loss, which the customer was keen to have done while the roof was already open. None of this work needed building regulations sign-off, so it was straightforward from a paperwork point of view.

Finish and Guarantee

Once the tiles were on and the ridge was finished, the roof looked completely different to how it started, with no sign of the leak that had been the original problem.
