New Roof Installation Southend
This job came in after a call from a homeowner in Southend whose roof had started leaking. Water getting through timbers is never something to leave, so once we'd had a look and given a free no obligation quotation, the customer decided to go ahead. They'd been recommended to us by a friend, which is usually how the best jobs come about in this trade.
The existing roof was beyond a simple patch repair. Rather than chase leaks around for months, we agreed on a full roof replacement, stripping everything back and starting again with new materials throughout.

What the work involved
We fitted Marley tiles in a charcoal grey finish, which gave the property a much cleaner and more consistent look than the old covering. Underneath, we used a breathable membrane felt conforming to British standards, laid correctly to manage moisture and keep the roof space dry for years to come. We also fitted a dry ridge system along the ridge line rather than the old mortar bedding, which holds up better over time and needs less maintenance.
As part of the replacement we fitted new lead flashing and valleys, both important for keeping water away from joints and roof junctions where leaks tend to start. We also improved the roof ventilation while we were up there, which helps stop condensation building up in the loft space and protects the timbers long term. Scaffolding was needed for a job of this size, and we arranged that as part of the project so the customer didn't have to deal with a separate contractor.

Timescale and standards
The full replacement took three days from start to finish. There was no damage to the timbers or decking underneath, which meant we could move straight on with the new roof without any delays for repair work. No building regulations sign-off was needed for this project, and we didn't carry out any additional work while we had access, keeping things straightforward and focused on the roof itself.
Everything was carried out under our public liability insurance, and the finished roof comes with a 10 year guarantee. That covers the customer for peace of mind long after the scaffolding has come down.

Working in Southend and along the Essex coast
Roofs in Southend and the surrounding Essex coastline take a fair bit of punishment. Salt air and coastal winds off the sea put extra strain on tiles, flashing and fixings compared with properties further inland, so getting the underlay and ridge detail right matters more here than in a lot of places we work. A breathable membrane and a well fitted dry ridge system both help the roof cope with that kind of exposure.
We've carried out roofing work across Southend and the wider Essex area for a good number of years, and jobs like this one are typical of what we're asked to do: an older roof that's started to fail, and a homeowner who wants it sorted properly rather than patched up again.
